Outdoors, caladiums prefer part to full shade exposure and soak up heat and humidity. They do best in temperatures over 65 degrees in evenly moist but not wet soil. Cool, soggy soils make them unhappy, so planting in pots or raised beds with good drainage in a hot protected spot will help warm up the soil faster in cooler summer regions. You’d think you might need a lot of fertilizer to support all that bodacious foliage and color, but actually, they thrive with regular applications of fertilizer diluted to ¼ to ½ strength.
