Description
A Poetic Dance of Blue and Gold
Hosta ‘Lakeside Rhapsody’ is a sophisticated and highly sought-after masterpiece from the prolific breeding program of Mary Chastain. This medium-to-large cultivar is a stellar example of the “Lakeside” legacy, offering a refined elegance that will anchor any Canadian woodland garden. It features broad, heart-shaped leaves with a deep, blue-green centre that is strikingly contrasted by a wide, creamy-yellow margin. As the season progresses into the warm Canadian summer, the margins transition to a bright, clean white, creating a luminous “glowing” effect in the shade. Its dense, mounding habit and classic variegation make it a “rhythm-maker” for the garden, providing visual movement and structure from spring through frost.
Why It Stands Out
- Dynamic Margin Transition: Watch as the wide borders shift from a buttery yellow in spring to a brilliant, crisp white by midsummer.
- Heavily Seersuckered Texture: As the plant matures, the foliage develops a beautiful puckered and corrugated surface that adds incredible tactile depth.
- Exceptional Leaf Substance: The thick, durable leaves provide excellent resistance to slugs and maintain their integrity against wind and rain.
- Luminous Shaded Glow: The wide, light-coloured margins act as a natural reflector, brightening up the darkest corners of your landscape.
- Showy Pale Lavender Blooms: In midsummer, sturdy scapes carry clusters of bell-shaped pale lavender flowers that are a favourite for local hummingbirds.

Grower’s Tip
To truly capture the “rhapsody” of this variety, we recommend placing it in a spot with filtered morning sun; this helps the creamy margins transition to white more effectively while keeping the blue centre saturated. In our Bécancour, QC nursery, we wait for that specific wide-margin definition and the characteristic “Lakeside” leaf substance to emerge before we approve them for shipping. This True to Type verification ensures you aren’t receiving a mystery variegated plant, but the authentic Mary Chastain selection that is ready to perform in our unique Canadian climate.
