Description
A Shimmering Golden Halo for the Canadian Shade
Peter Ruh registered Hosta ‘Abby’ in 1990 as a sport of ‘Gold Drop’. It forms a dense, tidy mound of heart-shaped foliage suited to shorter Canadian growing seasons. The leaves display a dark green centre edged by wide chartreuse-to-yellow margins that brighten through summer. It grows well across zones 3–9, making it a reliable choice from coast to coast. Use it at the front of a border or as a bright edging plant in a shaded bed.
- Luminous Contrast: Dark green centres are framed by wide chartreuse-to-yellow margins that intensify as the summer progresses.
- Compact Perfection: Reaching only about 17 cm (6.5″) in height, it is ideal for small urban gardens or the front of a perennial bed.
- Mid-Summer Blooms: In July and August, tall scapes rise above the foliage and carry delicate lavender flowers that attract local pollinators.
- Tough and Hardy: Inheriting the vigour of its Gold Drop parentage, it handles the temperature swings of zone 3 with ease.

Grower’s Tip: Because ‘Abby’ is a sport, we verify stable variegation at our Bécancour, QC trial fields before any plant ships. Every division leaves only after the first flush of spring growth confirms True to Type golden margins and a healthy root system.
