Birkin Philodendron is a recent introduction with exceptionally showy leaves of deep green heavily marked with creamy white. This Philodendron is slower growing than most and not a vining type. The top growth is self-supporting and vertical, making this plant excellent for growing in smaller, confined spaces. Philodendron ‘Birkin’ is also known by the trade name White Wave and is a sport of Philodendron Rojo. Sometimes the red variegation of Rojo is visible in Birkin.Best Locations For Growing Birkin PhilodendronPhilodendrons are extremely easy to grow and notoriously not fussy about their surroundings. Average humidity and medium light levels will keep Philodendron thriving. Birkin is perfect for a small office or apartment. This plant is non-vining and does not need room to spread out or grow in a hanging basket like other varieties of Philodendron. All parts of Philodendron are poisonous and should not be grown in areas with children or pets.Birkin Philodendron Sunlight RequirementsBirkin Philodendron will benefit from indirect, filtered light in the house. The higher levels keep Birkin’s coloring bright and overall growth compact. Medium light levels are acceptable for the summer months but may not be strong enough during the darker winter. Philodendron responds well to artificial grow lights when light levels are too low. Birkin Philodendron CarePhilodendrons prefer potting soil that is free draining and rich in nutrients. Repotting every year in the spring will rejuvenate the plants. Use soil-based indoor potting soil with worm castings added and ensure the container has suitable drainage holes. The large leaves will benefit from regular wiping with a damp cloth. This keeps dust and dirt from clogging the air pores so that Birkin Philodendron can filter the air more efficiently.Watering Birkin PhilodendronPhilodendrons are tropical plants that appreciate consistently moist soil that also drains well. Watering needs can be judged by the condition of the leaves. Drooping leaves mean either a lack of or too much water. The top 1-2 inches of soil should be left to dry between waterings. Upright varieties, such as Birkin, have slightly more drought tolerance. Watering needs will decrease during the winter when Philodendron typically slows growth.Feeding Birkin PhilodendronFertilizing is required year-round for Philodendrons. During the active growth period of spring and summer, feed with a balanced diluted liquid houseplant food monthly. Feeding every 6-8 weeks in the winter will help Philodendron keep its color and leaf size.Birkin Philodendron InformationLight Exposure: Bright Indirect Light, Medium LightCare Requirements: EasyWatering Requirements: Average – When the top 2 inches of the soil dries out.Pet Friendly: NoKid Friendly: NoAir Purifier: ModerateHabit: UprightGrowth Rate: SlowMature Height: 3 feetMature Spread: 3 feetFlowering: NoFlower Color(s): NoneFlower Shade/Description: Grown for FoliageFragrant: NoFoliage Type: Foliage Color(s): Green, WhiteFoliage Description: Glossy Dark Green with White PinstripesTemperature: 65° – 80°F (18° – 27°C)Humidity: Average to Above Average (40% – 80%Common Name: Birkin PhilodendronOther Name(s): Philodendron ‘White Wave’Scientific Name: Philodendron ‘Birkin’Plant Type: House Plant
